Anthem Maternal Health Challenge

Anthem, Inc. knows that there are few things more important to people than the decision to bring a new family member into the world. In addition to positive experiences that come during this period, there are difficulties and inequities that can occur before, during and after childbirth which can impact the entire family.  The World Health Organization estimates that more than 295,000 women die a year from pregnancy related causes. The United States alone has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries.  Approximately 700 women die annually in the U.S. due to pregnancy-related complications.  Considerable disparities currently exist in these mortality rates, specifically among Black and American Indian/ Alaskan Native mothers. In addition, approximately three in five pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.  Maternal health concerns also include pregnancy complications such as hypertensive disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, and pulmonary embolism.

The Anthem Maternal Health Challenge seeks to work with entrepreneurs and startups to use innovative, evidence-based solutions to transform the current state of maternal health. These solutions should address the multifaceted contributing factors such as racial health inequities that impact mothers before, during, and after childbirth.
