Wellcome Invites Proposals for COVID-19 Epidemic Preparedness

Wellcome and the UK Department for International Development (DFID) have issued a call for proposals aimed at strengthening the evidence base for the prevention and control of coronavirus (COVID-19). Teams can be based anywhere in the world (apart from mainland China).  Proposals should be focused on helping low- and middle-income countries prepare for and deal with the epidemic.

Examples of research areas of interest to Wellcome and DFID include but are not limited to clinical research (understanding the natural history of the disease, optimizing clinical management, or population cohort studies); treatments (supportive and specific); pathogenesis; epidemiology; and social sciences and ethics.  Proposals that address vaccine development will not be considered.

Under this call, Wellcome and DFID will provide flexible funding of up to £2 million, with awards lasting up to two years.  To be eligible at an award, applicants must be based at an academic research organization, a not-for-profit or government body, or a private-sector organization and must be able to accept Wellcome and DFID's standard grant conditions.
