Definition
This seed grant program aims to enhance the capacity of Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) to leverage its shared clinical data resources to enhance research programs across its network of its 22 hospitals. The ability to capture, access, share, and analyze clinical and experimental information including diagnostics, radiographic images, and genomics is critical to building a high profile research enterprise and transitioning to precision medicine. This opportunity is designed to leverage the relationship between SHC and the Georgia Institute of Technology (GT).
The goal of this program is to create pilot research projects and tools that align with the needs and aims of the clinicians in the SHC network to make it possible to conduct clinical research and to facilitate clinical practice across SHC’s clinical sites that are currently not possible with the existing SCH infrastructure/registries. The seed grant will support GT faculty and/or research associates and/or students to work directly with SHC physicians and surgeons to define the minimum core data elements that are to be extracted from SHCIS and incorporated into SHC clinical research studies. The core data elements include diagnostics, radiographic images, and genomics. These projects and tools must include the design of secure data analytics infrastructures/registries and must include principle investigators from both SCH and GT. All projects must conform to a common and compliant data platform so that a pooling of resources is possible. The application should clearly state the research question and objectives of the data resource, as well as the benefits of its construction for the SHC system.

Funding Period / Budgetary Limits
The maximum funding period is one (1) year for single site projects. SHC will accept a multi-center data analytics seed grant with a maximum two (2) year funding period. The annual budget limit for single-site applications (including Georgia Tech faculty and one Shriner’s hospital site) is $50,000 per year. For multi-center applications (including Georgia Tech faculty and more than one Shriner’s hospital site), the annual budget limit is $75,000 per year ($150,000 max over a two-year period). SHC physician/surgeon PIs are expected to devote a minimum of 10% effort to a data analytics seed grant project.
Application Structure
The primary component of the application is your research plan: a 5-page, single-spaced, Arial 11 font, 1” margin scientific plan document that includes the following:

- Notes:
- References should be listed but are not included in the page limit. Appendices are not allowed.
- Not included in the 5-page limit but also required are budget, budget justification, and NIH-format bios of key personnel
